![]() ![]() (Yes, the fact that Soul and Sid get better could also be said to undermine those emotions, but at least I give those a pass not only for being so early in the main series but also because somehow the emotions at that time didn’t feel undermined: Soul was willing to die for Maka, repeatedly, and Sid’s death honestly did hit Clay, Akane, and Naigus hard.)īut somehow, this manga ending sucks so much from a political dimension, too, in this post-2000 United States.Ī lot of what follows is a rough first draft, so I won’t pretend what I have to say is coherent, well-thought, or, even as I’m asking for truth and logic, even that logical. As I’ll say in the conclusion to this post, it fucks up Soul Eater and undermines any emotion you get from seeing Soul shielding Maka or anyone in NOT mourning Sid’s death. To wrap up your series with a “What, me worry?” approach to life is so gross. ![]() The manga ending of Fire Force still sucks. Some of this is inspired by a question I got at the other blog, so while I try to figure out how to answer that question, I just wanted to rant here first. On my shit again, and, yeah, this is going to be political. And so many of you want this shit to lead into a Soul Eater reboot that badly that you don’t understand the hell of bad storytelling that awaits you. This is why I can’t sit through that anime, having seen how the manga turns out. God fucking damn it, we sat through Tamaki getting embarrassed and groped for this shit? “Women are here to procreate, that is what makes them the symbol of life, so here, the creator will make this underage girl the chief moment of nudity and fanservice and titillation in this manga!” This nonsense again reduces women to just procreation, ignores complexities when considering women, men, cisgender identity, trans identity, gay and bi and queer identity. ![]() It was bad enough to make Fire Force just the opposite of Soul Eater rather than its own thing to then make it an extension of Soul Eater is not as clever an inversion as many people think, now it’s just somehow even more derivative.Īnd keep being gross, Ohkubo, you fucking hack. The cat woman in Soul Eater is fine being seen as sexual? We’ll make the cat girl in Fire Force really bothered by being naked against her will.Īnd all so that this could make Fire Force into a prequel, where all the stuff that made it the anti- Soul Eater is stripped away. Soul Eater had a young teenage girl with pigtails as the lead, where she is not treated to a lot of current gross depictions of underage girls in manga? Fire Force will have an older teenage boy as the lead–and make the pigtail girl now be the subject of a lot of gross depictions of underage girls in manga. Soul Eater took a lighter approach to some serious topics? Fire Force will try to be a super-serious analysis about religion and state corruption. Soul Eater made death less serious? Then Fire Force will take it super seriously. I say this to point out that Tamaki’s existence in Fire Force, like so much of this manga, is just to be the anti- Soul Eater, failing to build a story on its own merits. ![]() I don’t say this to shame Blair: her body, her life, she can do what she wants (aside from ignoring that people like Soul don’t want to be grabbed by her–which, yeah, shame her for that). Tamaki is indeed supposed to be the anti-Blair, in all the worst ways.īut whereas Blair embraces her role, Tamaki refuses to, so she gets punished with unwilling fanservice. I also got another question on the other blog that I’ll also respond to, that inspired this realization for me: ![]()
